  1. Summary #2 (chp 15-19)

In chapter 15, the reader meets the St. Clare family, learning that Augustine St. Clare had fallen in love with a northern women but had been deceived into thinking she was to marry someone else (when she had loved him the entire time). Instead, he had settled for Mary, a conceited hypochondriac, who needs a lot of care; causing Augustine to have his cousin, Miss Ophelia, visit to help him care for her and the kids.

In chapter 16, Evangeline is described as the opposite of her mother, Marie, who constantly complains of Mammy, but could not survive without her. Mammy constantly laments due to the separation from her husband, however, no one listens. Eva on the other hand, does all in her power to make Tom happy and is constantly impacting everyone in a positive way.

In chapter 17, A Quaker man, Phineas, has agreed to drive George, Harry, and Eliza to their next stop on the way to Canada. They plan to go at night in hopes to avoid Tom Loker. They hide at a narrow campsite, where each of Loker’s gang would have to enter one by one. Loker appears and George promises to defend his freedom, as Loker approached closer, George shot at him in the side and Phineas pushed him over the embankment. Eliza felt sorry for him and Phineas promised to take him to the nearest Quaker place to heal him.

In chapter 18, Uncle Tom's status in the house increases as he takes care of the St. Clare's finances. Uncle Tom grows worrisome about Augustine's drinking problems, but St. Clare promises to stop. Similarly to Uncle Tom, Miss Ophelia proves to be a fixer-upper in the household. Prue, a slave who visits to sell her rolls, admits to her drinking problems caused by her several encounters with slaveowners using her as a breeding machine to sell off her children. After Tom hears the story, he encounters the energetic Evangeline, who attempts to cheer him up (not understanding why he's upset), but he explains the story to her and she shares in his despair.

In chapter 19, a few days after hearing the story of Prue, the St. Clare’s hear that she has been whipped to death by her slaveowner. Miss Ophelia is outraged to hear that slaves are considered property and remain unprotected by the law, and accuses the St. Clare's of supporting slavery. However, Augustine tells of his upbringing, being raised by a mother of good morals, who never confronted her husband about owning slaves. When his father died, he and his brother inherited the family slaves. Augustine wishes to be a good slaveowner, because in a society so narrow-minded, there's not much else he claims he can do. St. Clare also tells a story of a rebellious slave who attempted running away, whom St. Clare tamed and eventually gave free papers. The slave felt so touched, that he dedicated his life to St. Clare. Evangeline cries as she listens to the stories and later helps Uncle Tom write a letter to his wife and children.

  2. Summary #3 (20-24)
St. Clare buys a young slave named Topsy and gets Miss Ophelia to tutor her by using Christianity. Topsy isn't used to Christian behavior though and she steals some gloves and then Miss Ophelia asks her to confess her other sins and Topsy lists a bunch that she didn't do just to be nice and do what Miss Ophelia wanted. Eva and Topsy become friends (because Eva is nice to everyone lol) and Topsy is having a really rough time learning the catechism.

Aunt Chloe gets Tom’s letter (thank god) but Mr. Shelby is still in a bunch of debt and yells at Mrs. Shelby when she tells him she wants to get enough money to buy Tom back. Chloe calls Mrs. Shelby outside and asks to be rented out to make food to earn money for Tom and Mrs. Shelby says yes.

Two years pass and Tom gets a letter from George talking out Kentucky life and his studies and stuff. Tom and Eva are like bff’s and he gives her presents and she reads him the Bible. The family goes to a villa on like a vacation. Eva tells Tom she's seen angels and that she's going to join them in heaven soon then Miss Ophelia calls them inside and says she shouldn't be out long because she's sick. Miss Ophelia is worrying about Eva’s cough and Tom notes that she's a lot thinner.

St. Clare’s brother Alfred and his son Henrique come for a visit and Eva and Henrique are getting along swimmingly until Henrique hits his slave (named Dodo which is super rude) and Eva gets really sad and is like why would you do that?? Henrique doesn't really understand why she's sad so he gives Dodo some money to buy himself candy and then Eva thanks Dodo for his work and Dodo likes Eva’s gesture more. The two dads have been watching and then argue about slavery and St. Clare sys the slaves are gonna rise up but Alfred is like we’ll just keep them down and then Eva asks Henrique to love Dodo and he says he will.

Alfred and Henrique go home and Eva takes a turn for the worst. Marie (who like never used to care about her kid) starts lamenting her child’s death and saying it affects her most. She looks like she is going to recover then relapses but still treats the slaves kindly and asks her father if he will set them all free when she dies. He says he will try but promises to free Tom if she dies. She asks St. Clare to meet her in the house of the lord one day (please be Christian dad).

Next thing you know, all the slaves are sent off to a warehouse to be sold :(

    Chapter 30
While in the warehouse, Tom and Adolph receive taunts. Susan and Emmeline are being sold as well, and as a mother, Susan is worried for her daughter Emmeline. Susan tried to make Emmeline look less attractive so she might not be sold, but Mr. Skeggs says she will be sold for more money if she puts her hair back properly. Slowly but surely, each slave is sold. Susan and Emmeline are separated, but the daughter and Tom end up together.

    Chapter 31
Simone Legree is the new owner of Tom and Emmeline. They get in a boat and ride up the Red River. Legree finds out Tom is religious, and threatens him and says that he will believe in nothing except Legree himself. The owner begins to scare the newly purchased slaves, saying that he works the slaves until death. Talk about human equality…

    Chapter 32
Once they arrive to the plantation, Legree ridicules them, causing anxiety and fear. Tom thinks about his destiny and whether God is with him in this journey. Eva read a Bible verse before he went to bed, and he is reassured. The next morning after his slumber, he feels much better!

    Chapter 33
Legree dislikes Tom’s efficiency and willingness. During work, some attractive women showed up, two of whom were named Cassy and Lucy. Tom puts some cotton in Lucy’s basket, and one of Legree’s helpers Sambo sees this interaction. She threatens them and tells Legree what happened. Legree then tells Tom that she has to whip Lucy as punishment. Tom disagrees, and is beat up by Sambo, Quimbo, and Legree.

She’s been living in misery ever since.

    Chapter 37

  5. (continued Summary #5)
    Chapter 38
Depression hits Tom pretty hard. Legree says that he wanted to put Tom in charge, but for a price: to stop practicing his religion. He refuses, now feeling even sadder than before. He feels that God is no longer with him.
A couple nights after, Cassy gets Legree drunk to the point where it is safe for the slaves to escape. Even then, Tom refuses. At first, she says she’s going to run away, but Tom’s faith pushes her to do otherwise. He decides to help two other women escape, praying that God will be with them.

A ghost story… Cassy distracts Legree and the servants that there are ghosts in the attic. Later, Cassy tells Legree that she’s seen a ghost, but he won’t have it. Sambo and Quimbo see them and get the dogs to chase them down, but it may be too late. Freedom, once more?

One month later, George frees all their servants and slaves! But a lot of them don’t want to leave. He says they can still work for them for pay. The reason for their freedom, he says, was Tom’s death. He was inspired and wants to be a good Christian!
